2027 Kuana Hawaii Keawe Workshop Weekend COMPLETE SUMMER PACKAGE

LOCATION: HILO, HAWAII • $947 (Save $100) This all inclusive package is for all three 3 day weekend workshops (July 9-11, 2027), (July 16-18, 2027) and  (July 23-25, 2027) • 9 days of classes, fiestas and workshops + 3 Sunday night pa’ina spread out over three weekends in July)

We will use the HWC (Hilo Woman’s Club) as our home base— hosting craft and Hula classes there daily. Huaka’i (field trips) will be at selected Hawaii Island outdoor locations accessible with regular vehicles (non-4 wheel drive). We will meet daily at HWC first and then caravan to field trip locations. After our excursions, we will return to HWC for classes. We will try to coordinate some carpooling for the excursions.

ATTIRE/FOOTWEAR: For daily excursions, dress comfortable with shoes you can get dirty. Shorts and tank/tee is perfect. It’s July and will be warm. For Hula workshops, dress as you normally would, pa’u skirt or tee/shorts.

SUNDAY PA’INA: we will host you folks Sunday evening for Hawaiian food and live music. We will break earlier on Sunday and give you folks a chance to leave, rest, shower and regroup about 6:30pm at Hilo Woman’s Club.

Friday July 9, 2027

7:00AM-4:00PM 

PLACE: HĀENA

WORKSHOP: Mo’olelo and Hula

“Ke Ha’a Lā Puna, Lei O Hā’ena”

First day involves learning the mo’olelo of Pele and Hopoe.  Classes include Oli, Hula Kahiko and Hula Auana.

Saturday July 10, 2027

7:00AM-4:00PM

PLACE: KŪLANI

WORKSHOP: Gather long Kala’au. Class involves making long and short Kala’au (percussion sticks)

MELE: Hula Pahu Mele: Kānehekili Nā Holo I Ka Lani

Day 2 includes gathering and making both short and long Kāla’au—Hawaiian percussion sticks. Haumana learn the mo’olelo of Kānekili, God of thunder and Pele’s brother. Hula include Hula Pahu and implement Hula.

Sunday July 11, 2027

PLACE: Hilo Woman’s Club

Workshop: Lei Making Kui Poepoe Lau Niu—Mau’u

Final day covers two style of Lei making: Kui Poepoe with Lau Niu and Pua Mau’u + Hilo Makawalu—a multi-strand, thin Hilo style lei.  

SUNDAY PA’INA 6:30PM-8:30PM • Our farewell dinner and time to hang out and have fun. We host with Hawaiian food while you Hula. Live Hawaiian music from Kuana and Friends.

Friday July 16, 2027

Huaka’i to the district of Kā’u (further than 2026 location) to retrace the steps of late hula master, George Nā’ope. Haumana will learn his mele, “Ka Nani A’O Kā’u” There will be a session to gather Poleho shells at Honu’apu beach to use the following day, Saturday.

Hula will learned and performed on location.

Saturday July 17,  2027

 We will back at our hub, Hilo Woman’s Club for a day filled with Hawaiian crafts and Lei making.

•Kula Pepeiao—Poleho Shell earrings collected from Kā’u will be used to make earrings. Students learn to clean and prep shells in the Pīkake style of Niihau.

•Lei Making—students are taught the Hilo methodology for making Tī leaf into multi-strand lei to be used for Hula performances.

Sunday July 28,  2027

 The entire day is devoted to learn how to gather and cook several traditional Hawaiian dishes found at parties and family lū’au in Hilo. Kuana’s family is known for their delicious Hawaiian food. This session shares those secrets and also teaches haumana how to make these dishes at home and on the continent.

Dishes include: Laulau, Kalua pig, Poi pounding, Hō’i’o salad and Kūlolo. Students learn to gather, prep and cook these dishes that they will enjoy at the Sunday evening pa’ina.

HULA KAHIKO + OLI Workshops

'Eli'eli Kūlana 'O Keaukaha" + “Ka Manu Kukini Laehano”

Huaka’i: Exploring the pana of Keaukaha to gain further insight and inspiration for the mele and oli.

Saturday July 24, 2027

 Hawaiian craft day where students make their own Oeoe (Hawaiian wind instrument) and Ihu Hano ‘Ohe (nose flute). Haumana learn how to create and use these two instruments, their history and how to incorporate them in Hula. They will also learn accompanying chants for both instruments.

Kui Lauoho—students will learn to make this hairpiece in the humupapa style.

Sunday July 25, 2027

 This workshop starts early, before dawn as we travel to the famed southern point of Kumukahi and chant the sun up. Students will learn hula at this location 

SUNDAY PA’INA 6:00pm-8:00pm • Our farewell dinner and time to hang out and have fun. We host with Hawaiian food while you Hula. Live Hawaiian music.

$349 All Classes All 3 days  

Students need a foundation in Hula to keep up in these workshops.

There will be three workshop weekends in 2027:

July 9-11, 2027, July 16-18, 2027, July 23-25, 2027

All three weekends will have different field trip locations, different classes and different crafts.

 Facilitating and planning these workshop weekends involves significant effort and expense on our part a year in advance.  We will not be offering refunds for any reason.  You are welcome to sell your spot or gift it to someone.  We will not be maintaining a waiting list or advertise your desire to sell your spot.  If you’re not sure about attending next summer, wait and don’t purchase the package. If something comes up next July and you cannot attend it will be your responsibility to find a replacement or a buyer for your package.
